On our first whole day in Somerset, David and Penny take us to Glastonbury to see the Tor.
This is hugely significant. Look it up if you are interested, really important.
From my personal perspective, it is really interesting and up the biggest hill you have ever seen that you are actually expected to climb up. Not for those faint of heart or ankle. Nonetheless up we went. Not only an upward sloping path but at least 600 steps. Paul will confirm it was 521 feet straight up.
Although it almost killed me, it was truly spectacular and probably really meaningful if you are so inclined to believe in such things. ( me, I believe in the nymph/elf / mermaid creature of that waterfall in Norway. Ie if it rains, stay at home).(so me)
And going down the hill was worse. We came across the Cerne which is a statue of Hercules carved into the mountain. It was really odd to have the Herculaneum proportions of the carving pointed out to us. Nice.

And then David was dead set on us having lunch at a pub by the ocean. We stopped by Chesil beach which is a famous beach on the south east coast of England called the Jurassic coast. Fossils everywhere. As with all beaches other than in Australia, there is no sand. Usually these beaches have pebbles but Chesil beach has quite large stones and is truly weird. It actually looked like sand from a distance but was stones of at least 3 cm in diameter.
Finally we had lunch at Lyme Regis, a town on the sea which is a huge tourist destination full of tourists on an unusually warm summer's day in England. ( I say finally as it was hours from when we left and one of us needed a $&@&$ toilet).
On our previous trips, we had been on tours with, one might say, older people and toilet stops were part of the experience. David has a lot to learn in this regard.
Later that night, we caught a bus to Taunton to have drinks and dinner. Taunton is a typical Somerset town full of pubs and churches.
We had drinks at an old English pub, Ring a bell, and then dinner at quite a modern restaurant, Brazz.
We took a taxi back to Wellington with the best taxi driver ever. He had an unplaceable accent but a deep loud mellifluous voice and an opinion on everything. We found this really funny....... After a few drinks.
A great day and night.
