On Friday we left beautiful Bergen to take the train to Oslo via the famous town of Flam. This is a very famous train trip and includes the highest train journey or the train journey with the steepest climb. So 'we' carried our luggage, 4 bags onto a train leaving Bergen to get off at Myrdal and then onto another train to flam. The train ride then from Myrdal to Flam is the most famous part of the trip with the highest climb etc. it was all amazing and beautiful in a really cute train that felt like the Hogwarts train. It is green and looks like a toy train except that it has 5 sets of breaks for the downhill journey to make sure it can stop. Good.
The name of the waterfall above and the dancing girl below.
We Went past many beautiful waterfalls and amazing scenery. Paul struck up a friendship with an English couple sitting across from us. They told us there was a big surprise coming and to get ready.........
And suddenly the train stopped and we were all told to leave the train and look to our left. It was the most amazing waterfall and we had a 5 minute stop to admire and take photos.
Luckily the English guy was a bit of a photographer and took quite a Good photo of us. I took some photos of the waterfall and even my very first selfie.
And then wonder of wonders, there was eerie elf/mermaid type music and far off on top of a ridge, a woman in a pink dress was I think dancing to the music. All very weird but I think it was part of the show. I wanted to laugh. It was very weird and silly. You have this majestic mountain and waterfall and you stick a dancing girl on it? Why???
And then we arrived in flam and were in theory to do a fiord cruise, not forgetting that flam itself is on a fiord so we were already seeing and in fact staying in a fiord and once you have seen a fiord, etc etc
Basically we were too late for the cruise. Even though it was about 4 in the afternoon with at least another 6 hours of light, we had missed the last cruise leaving flam and even the jet boats and all other sea faring vehicles were unable to accommodate us. So no fiord cruise.
At first this was a little devastating but see the previous paragraph re the fact we are on a fiord and once you have seen one etc.
We trudged up to our hotel at the top of a hill with our 4 heavy bags with even heavier hearts.
No fiord flam (&@&@$)
The hotel was like a bed and breakfast with tiny rooms, communal lounge TV room and single beds. Back to backpacking!
However because it was up so high, it had a great view of the fiord on which we were staying and the water and a cruise ship in the harbour. And it had dinner included as well. After our obligatory walk (exercise damn it), we found a great bar not far from our hotel and relaxed and enjoyed the beauty of Flam, fiord cruise or no fiord ($&&@$&)cruise.
I have more photos of the train but due to technical difficulties with the iPad and photos and wifi so will add them in later.
